Strates d’écritures I

A form of writing without an alphabet meets a form of writing composed of signs. The tunnels carved into the wood by bark beetles overlap with the Greek inscriptions engraved on ancient stelae in Turkey. One carves into the wood the path necessary for the perpetuation of life; the other preserves in stone the words and the memory of those who carved it. When their lines meet, the tunnel becomes a sign and the letter becomes a line. The gaze then wavers between what is read and what is seen, between the meaning of words and the pattern of the marks. Strates d’écritures I thus creates a dialogue between two forms of transmission, separated by centuries but united by a single gesture: leaving a mark that may outlive them.
