A bark beetle-damaged ash branch on larch

This sculpture explores the memory embedded in wood and the silent traces left by time.
The base is carved from an old piece of larch marked by years of exposure to the elements. After years of being exposed to the weather, the wood has naturally turned gray and black. I chose to preserve these changes: cracks, layers, variations in color, and scars bear witness to the slow passage of time on the material.
Above it, a fragment of ash wood infested by bark beetles, stained with India ink, bears the tunnels carved beneath the bark by wood-boring insects. These organic tracings appear as a fragile and instinctive form of writing, a buried memory revealed on the surface of the wood.
Balancing tension and suspension, Rémanences evokes what persists despite erosion: the imprint of a passage, the survival of a presence, the memory of life still vibrating within the material.
