L'Oiseau

Walnut and zinc, steel base

Like Brancusi's bird, my bird is represented without feathers or wings. Its body is suggested only by the two geometric shapes of a circular arc for the abdomen and a pyramid shape for the head and beak. Its posture is slender, with the line of its back and beak merging into one. Tension and momentum in perfect balance are further accentuated in the front and back views.

The symbolism of duality is manifold in this piece. The geometric shapes seen in profile fade away completely in the other views. The slender form evokes spiritual aspiration, but also the dive of the Northern Gannet in his quest for bodily nourishment. Last but not least, the shapes used symbolize the feminine and the masculine. Opposites” coming together to form unity.
