In calligraphy, counterform refers to the empty spaces inside and outside letters. Counterforms influence the way letters are perceived in relation to each other. They are crucial to legibility. Here, I've played with counterforms to the point of making the letters almost invisible. If you stand back and look up, you can make out the letters, stuck together in a Neuland alphabet (contemporary typography). The work highlights the fundamental, existential need to look beyond appearances, beyond words, to understand substance rather than form, and to question everything, to analyze critically and calmly, even what may be set in stone.
